Mullein (Verbascum Thapsus) is also known as hare’s ear, common mullein, and tearwort. It’s found in temperate regions of Europe and the United States. Mullein comes from the plant genus of Scrophulariaceae. It is a perennial herb with long, hairy leaves and yellow or pink flowers.
Mullein leaf tea is a soothing traditional herbal tea made from either the flowers, leaves, or both flowers and leaves of the mullein plant that can be made in many ways and used as an effective treatment of many respiratory tract conditions. It can also be used as an inhalant to open the lungs, which has been used for centuries to treat asthma, bronchitis, and other lung conditions. The tea can also be used to relieve bronchial spasms and coughing, either by drinking it or inhaling the steam.
Mullein tea is a medicinal plant which is often prescribed to people who have upper respiratory complaints, such as bronchitis, asthma, and other lung conditions as Mullein has a soothing effect on the lungs and is an excellent tea for treating the symptoms of many respiratory issues, coughs and breathing related conditions.
Mullein tea can be made in many different ways. The simplest way to try mullein tea is to boil fresh (unprocessed) mullein leaves in hot water for several minutes, then strain it into a cup and drink it like tea. You can also add dried mullein leaves to your cup of tea and let it steep for 10-15 minutes or more.
Due to the small hairs on the mullein leaf it is advisable to strain the mullein tea before drinking as some have complained of a slightly itchy throat after drinking mullein leaf tea. There are a wide variety of herbal tea strainers available including natural bleach free tea bags and strainer balls which make the it much easier to make mullein tea.
An excellent way to enjoy fresh mullein tea is to brew a cup in a teapot, then strain it into a mug. Add a few drops of lemon juice to the tea for a refreshing taste, and enjoy it daily in the morning. For a very calming effect, you can add a couple of drops of lavender oil to the tea, or a few drops of rosemary oil. Add a pinch of stevia leaf, stevia extract or raw honey to the tea and enjoy it as a healthy alternative to your morning cup of coffee.
